Gentle and mellow, with a light citrus acidity unique to Asaka, and a refreshing aroma. Light body with a good balance of barrel-derived sweetness, malt flavor, and a moderate vanilla aroma. Short but firm aftertaste. Non-chill filtered (non-cooled filtered), natural color (no coloring) finish.

3. About Asaka Distillery

The Yamazakura Shuzo, founded in 1710 to the south of Lake Inawashiro, moved to Koriyama in 1765.
This Yamazakura Shuzo obtained a license in 1946 to brew whisky, which was in increasing demand as a national policy during the postwar U.S. military occupation.

The shortage of rice during and after the war made it extremely difficult to brew sake, and the influx of Western culture after the war was a factor in the company’s commitment to whisky production. During the period of rapid economic growth in the 1950s and 1960s, the company was called “Cherry in the North, Toa in the East, Mars in the West,” and Sasanokawa Shuzo’s “Cherry Whisky” became popular along with Toa Shuzo and Hombo Shuzo.

However, when the business entered an unfavorable period due to low growth and changing tastes, Toa Shuzo was forced to withdraw from the business in 2003, and the Sasanokawa Shuzo took custody of the barrels of the original sake at the Hanyu Distillery.
This was a big help in releasing “Ichiro’s Malt,” which later became popular around the world.

The Asaka Distillery is located in the “Sasanokawa Shuzo,” a sake brewery that has been in operation since the Edo period, and started operation at the end of October 2016 with the cooperation of Chichibu Distillery’s Ichiro Hido, with production facilities in place.

The pot stills look good against the old-fashioned white plaster walls.
